Hello everyone, it’s been a long time and I hope you’re all doing well out there. I just thought I would take a moment today to mention a topic that is close to my heart. A few months ago I helped start an event called Ogg Camp. 2 days Open Source And Free Culture Barcamp here in the UK. The last one was held in 2019 where I officially retired from the organization, but I hope new people will take over. There is strong interest. There were even plans to hold an OggCamp in 2020, but we all know what happened that year. The global pandemic put a stop to that. Don’t be afraid, there is good news, after 5 years of waiting is over, OggCamp is back in 2024!!
First, I might as well confess here. I very late posting this. Less than a month away as we speak. There have been a lot of previous announcements and I’m not breaking any news here. I just thought I’d better share the details again.
Ogg Camp 24 – October 12 to 13, 2024 in Pendulum Hotel and Conference Centre, Manchester
This is a wonderful place right in the heart of Manchester City Centre, surrounded by amenities and good travel links. Tickets are available now, there are suggested prices and also a “pay what you can” option to keep it accessible for everyone. There’s still time to book and plan your trip, but you’d better do it quickly. In fact, I just booked my hotel room at the venue today and there are plenty of alternative places to stay nearby if you need them.
I am NOT one of the organizers this time, I handed in my badge and gun (metaphorically) in 2019 but there is a brilliant team behind the event. I will be there as a participant and I am excited to experience things like this for the first time.
If you’ve never been to OggCamp and are wondering what OggCamp is all about, I can tell you that it’s a lot of fun and you won’t regret it. The crowd was friendly, plus there was lots to see and do with scheduled speaker lines and all the talks at Barcamp too. Anyone can give a talk, so you can even get in on the action yourself if you want. There are exhibition halls, rest areas, games to play, and last but not least, there are also great social events. There are usually pre-event drinks and socializing in the hotel bar on Friday nights, plus a party on Saturday nights for everyone to enjoy. If you are unsure whether to come then I encourage you to give it a try.
