When discussing skills, we often distinguish between those we master quickly and easily from a young age, and those we painstakingly develop over time. I firmly believe most skills fall into the latter category. Only a select few abilities feel naturally intuitive, while most are developed through rigorous practice.
The dilemma often lies in understanding what to practice and how, and more importantly, maintaining consistent practice. Reflecting on my efforts to perfect a particular skill, those efforts rarely go according to plan. Of the hundreds of fields I aspire to, I feel I can only achieve in a small part.
However, today’s discussion is not about my failed attempts. I want to explain some skills that I find very useful and that I continue to improve. These are not extraordinary skills like hacking or exploiting machines, but rather fundamental abilities that help individuals navigate the digital world, especially those who spend a lot of time behind a desk.
I offer these insights in the hope that they will be as useful to you as they have been to me. So, let’s delve into the list.
Variable Speed Reading
Reading goes far beyond what we usually think of as sources of information. Regardless of whether we spend a lot of time reading books, we definitely consume a lot of text from social media posts to articles and casual references. Speed reading is a topic that receives extensive coverage. I won’t go into the technique as there are plenty of resources online.
I would like to highlight the practical benefits of variable speed reading and some cautionary points to keep in mind. Speed reading, when done correctly, allows you to glance at large amounts of content quickly. However, this skill is not about constant speed. Similar to the title of the famous psychology book, “Thinking, Fast and Slow”, reading speed should also fluctuate depending on factors such as the type of content, your familiarity with the subject, and the author’s writing style. This flexibility allows you to maximize your reading experience. This facilitates a smooth transition between different steps when moving from an in-depth technology book to a science fiction novel, for example. Remember, the goal is not just to read blindly, but to understand, interpret, and enjoy the experience.
Reading, a somewhat forgotten art in our time, can be rediscovered through a book very aptly titled “How to Read a Book”. However, this is a book for practitioners, and I recommend that you familiarize yourself with the various genres before delving into it. You may want to consider:
- Monthly magazine in any form
- Fiction novel
- Non-fiction booklet
- Course books or curriculum
The goal is to have a few representative examples in mind as you start. Once you’ve sampled a few of these, move on to “How to Read a Book”, think of it as a step in your skill development journey. The references you take the time to explore will help you as the book provides examples of dos and don’ts.
The intangible benefits of variable speed reading include:
- Skim the unimportant parts
- Dig deeper into interesting parts at a leisurely pace
The real benefit is saving time. You avoid wasting time:
- Read slowly, which can take some time
- Reading too quickly, may result in missing important details or require revisiting a passage.
In the professional field, varying reading speeds can be an advantage in managing heavy email traffic or staying up to date with industry trends. In academia, these skills can help students learn large amounts of course material more effectively. Personally, you can finish that novel you’ve always wanted to read or keep up with the latest developments more conveniently.
Therefore, honing your variable speed reading skills can be very beneficial.
Improved Typing Speed
As we shift to distance learning and work from home scenarios, written communication becomes increasingly important. Whether it’s replying to professional emails, taking lecture notes, or simply chatting with friends, a faster typing speed can save time and increase our productivity. This skill is less about your equipment and more about your level of practice. Many recommend using a mechanical keyboard or other setup that claims to improve performance. In my experience, I find mechanical keyboards suitable for a certain audience. Despite having a separate keyboard and trackpad setup, I still prefer typing on my MacBook keyboard (skipping the controversial keyboards of 2016-2019).
The reason why increasing typing speed can be so transformative is simple: we think much faster than we can type. The more closely we align these two speeds, the more fluently we can write down our thoughts. Don’t try to achieve X WPM or Y CPM values, but try to comfortably match your typing speed to your thinking speed. Avoid comparing your speed with others; that’s irrelevant.
There are many typing tutors, such as keybr.com and others, that can help you practice typing. Start by positioning your hands correctly on the keyboard, gradually increase your speed without obsessing over spelling, then focus on typing accurately without paying attention to the keyboard. Eventually, you’ll be able to type without needing to look at the screen or keyboard. While it’s best to use both hands, you should feel comfortable enough to continue typing with just one hand if necessary.
Continuous Focus
In the digital age, one important skill that social media erodes is our ability to focus sustainably. In the midst of the hustle and bustle of the digital world, our attention is constantly focused in millions of directions. This fragmentation of attention can negatively impact our productivity and mental health. Therefore, developing sustained focus skills becomes increasingly important. I reminisce about the days when putting together a puzzle or reading a novel in one go was the norm. Today, completing a puzzle with more than 50 pieces at once or completing a novel in one go is considered an impressive feat.
However, cultivating our focus is an important skill. How you achieve this is up to you. For some people, meditation helps; for others, restricting access to distracting apps works. From using the Pomodoro technique (setting a timer at 20-minute intervals) to practicing meditation, you can find out what works best for you. If distractions are annoying and uncontrollable, take advantage of technology solutions.
I use origin ublock, Unhook, Dead LinkAnd Social Breaker to curb my social media consumption. my Built-in DNS blocked Instagram and Facebook, forcing me to manually change DNS settings to access them. Identify distractions and eliminate them systematically. Personally, I prefer to be indifferent, block out distractions, and try to function without them. There are some things I couldn’t do without, but I keep trying, hoping to one day kick those focus thieves out of my life.
Critical Thinking and Problem Solving

With so much information at our fingertips, the ability to critically evaluate and use this information to solve problems is key. Critical thinking and problem-solving skills are what turn raw data into valuable insights. In the professional world, these skills can help you solve problems, innovate, and make informed decisions. In academia, it is integral to understanding complex concepts, engaging in research, and developing deep learning experiences. On a personal level, it is invaluable for making decisions and solving everyday problems.
The first three entries will help you achieve better focus, resulting in faster reading and more efficient thought notation. This improvement paves the way for critical thinking and problem-solving skills. We solve problems every day. Technology is an ever-evolving field, and no one knows even half of it. Everyone is constantly learning and updating their skills. The ability to understand, assimilate and utilize acquired knowledge is as important to our survival as water.
Sometimes, the answer to a problem is just a click or a specific keyword away. This could be spending more time reviewing code or talking to rubber ducks. Improved focus will help you here. Improved reading and typing abilities will facilitate the accumulation of knowledge, which is important for critical thinking and problem solving. Persevering through challenging situations is essential.
Contrary to my advice about focus, if you get stuck on a problem for a long time, take a break. This helps clear mental fog and refocus. Restart from scratch if necessary – You are never truly starting from zero because you carry the wisdom of your past efforts with you.
With that I conclude this article on the simpler note that these skills have been very helpful and hopefully you will find them useful to you too. Also remember that this is a continuous growth journey and the goal is to be better than yesterday. This skill takes time and patience to hone, but I promise, it is worth the effort. This is a basic skill and will help throughout the base.
