Hello everyone, I hope you are doing well and that 2024 is treating you well so far. I wanted to write today to tell you about my weekly radio show. For those who don’t know, I’m hosting a show ArroweSound Hospital Radio for a while now, almost 2 years actually now that I think about it, time flies when you’re having fun hey. I thought I would share some more information about it.
I know from conversations with friends in other countries that hospital radios are very useful English institution. If I’m wrong and you also have it in your country, please let me know. That’s exactly what it sounds like. Radio programs are designed for patients and hospital staff to keep them informed and entertained throughout the day. In the UK, many well-known broadcasters are starting to get involved in hospital radio and this is a good proving ground, a place to learn the basics of radio presenting and gain experience.
Arrow Sound is the station for Arrowe Park Hospital on the Wirral in Merseyside. The most famous part of Merseyside clear Liverpool but this area actually covers both sides of the Mersey estuary. Arrowe Park is a fairly large hospital and opened in 1982. I often visited the accident and emergency department as a child. I was always falling from trees or having various misfortunes, breaking bones, and even cut my own finger (no joke). The staff kindly sewed it back together. I’m happy to report that my fingers are working as usual and I’m glad they’re working as usual, otherwise I wouldn’t be able to play the guitar so well today.

ArroweSound celebrated its 50th birthday last year as it actually began its life as Catherine Radio in 1973 at St Catherine’s Hospital in Birkenhead.
I’m joining the station in 2022 and I do a weekly show Thursday evenings 7pm to 9pm (UK time) but it’s broadcast over the internet, so anyone can listen to it anywhere in the world. I’ve gotten responses from people in Australia, Scandinavia and other places that have been really nice. The show is called Midweek Pick N Mix and it reflects my eclectic musical tastes. Each week I select an artist to feature and talk about in detail. I told their life stories as best I could and told anecdotes, as well as playing some of their songs throughout the show. Could be a famous artist like that Paul Simon, Tina Turneror maybe someone less known Nick Drake. I enjoyed doing the research for this and I love music history, so this was truly a labor of love.

Many people have asked me if they can get the show as a podcast and unfortunately the answer at this time is no, due to music licensing. We play commercial music and we do not have a license to use it for podcasts. Copyright laws still haven’t caught up with the podcasting phenomenon, even in 2024.
So I decided that in the future I will write a small article about me Artists In The Spotlight here on the blog and include a music playlist from them to accompany it. Hopefully it’s something you enjoy.
Listen to the radio show if you are interested and able. You can listen to it via the website, at TuneIn App or via a smart speaker like Alexa or Google Home. You simply ask them to “play Arrowesound Hospital radio”.
